In a series of blog posts, we are pleased to be showcasing the winners of the 2016 Canadian Fairtrade Awards. The Canadian Fairtrade Awards recognize exceptional Fairtrade supporters and are an opportunity to celebrate all of the great work done in the year by businesses, organizations and individuals.
The 2016 winner of Event of the Year is the World Walk (Marche Monde) Oxfam-Québec – an amazing display of global solidarity that not only involved key partners but also many Fairtrade products. The event embodied the values and mission that we all commonly share.
Here are some details about the World Walk.
- The 2016 event was the 46th edition of the World Walk in Montreal. Over the years, the World Walk welcomed more than 300 000 young people whom were and still are inspired to change the World, to make it fairer.
- The Club 2/3 and now Oxfam-Québec, the organizers, have, for a long time, focused on local and fair trade options for the food which is provided to participants and volunteers, such as coffee, tea, and sugar.
- More than a yearly event, the World Walk combines all aspects of youth active citizenship, such as promotion of fair trade by our Magasin du Monde. As part of the event’s programming, the youth and the organizers not only raise awareness on fair trade but they also have mascots in banana costumes distributing promotional materials from Fairtrade Canada.
Jean-Pierre Denis, cofounder of the World Walk Oxfam-Québec - “The World Walk is an initiatory rite of passage to responsible citizenship, to civic involvement. The day you participate in the Walk, you’re not alone anymore, you’re part of a group of committed people who want to change the world positively.”
